FAQs

  • All you need is a wrench to tighten the legs onto the grill.

  • We recommend burning an initial fire on the grill.  Once the grill grate is hot, you can wipe the grill grate with oil and a rag to season.

  • We recommend purchasing a separate small metal bucket (Small Metal Bucket) to put under the drainage hole in the middle.  The Hanksville Grill is designed so rain water will drain from the bottom, allowing us to offer a lifetime warranty. We also recommend a wire grill brush for cleaning the grill grate after cooking (Grill Brush).

  • Covering the grill or keeping out of the elements will keep your grill looking nice and seasoned.  However, you do not NEED to do this.  The grills can be left out uncovered.  You may see signs of rust, wear and tear but the integrity will not be compromised.

The grill grate and coming attachments should be kept in a covered space. Because these are your cooking surfaces, more care should be taken.  We recommend brushing and oiling your grill grate before and after cooking.

  • The grill can show signs of surface rust.  You can simply use a rag and some vegetable oil to season the grill.   A little rust is normal and will not change the integrity of the grill.

  • Hardwoods and fruitwoods.  Part of the fun of cooking on a Hanksville Grill is to play around with different wood and see how it flavors the food you are cooking.  We use what we have in Vermont.  Maple, oak, apple, cherry are all good options.  We also recommend split wood that is about half the size of your customary wood stove splits (2-3” in diameter).  This provides more control, quicker heat.  You can use larger splits but will need more patience as it takes more time to get coals.

  • Yes, you can use charcoal.  We recommend using lump charcoal versus briquettes.  This provides a cleaner smoke and fire.  We have been known to aid the starting of a fire with charcoal, adding wood when the charcoal fires to speed up your pre-cook time.

  • We recommend removing ashes into a flameproof metal canister after each cook.  After scraping coals, take a rag and oil and season the cone.

Before and after each cook, we suggest brushing and oiling the grill grate and keeping attachments under cover.  While the pipe attachment is still warm, we suggest wiping that pipe as grease can drip down the pipe

  • The grill will either be shipped FEDEX or UPS.  They will arrive in a cardboard box with a foam insert.  The shipped grill weighs approximately 95#’s
